al-Shaykh Abu Abdulrahman al-Bilawi, Adnan Ismael Najm, was born in 1971 in Wilayat al-Anbar. He was close to al-Shaykh Abu Mus’ab al-Zarqawi and was his right hand man for three years. He also participated in establishing Jama’at al-Tawheed wal-Jihad, and served as senior military leader for al-Jama’a, and was also head of the Shura Council. He was arrested in al-Basra in 2007, he was able to escape, along with a number of other prisoners during a coordinated Islamic State attack on the prisons at Abu Ghreib and al-Taji in July, 2013.
al-Shaykh was the architect of the recent victories of the Islamic state in Iraq (Conquest of al-Mosul). The Islamic State named the operation after him, calling it the “The Battle of the Lion of Allah Abu Abdulrahman al-Bilawi”. Also al-Shaykh Abu Muhammad al-Adnani eulogized him in the audio statement “Whatever good that befalls you, is from Allah“,
Also, we will not forget to give to the soldiers, sons, and supporters of the Islamic State everywhere, the news of the martyrdom of one of the heroes, heads, symbols, landmarks, leaders, and men of the Islamic State – Adnan Ismail Najm, Abu Abdulrahman al-Bilawi al-Anbari – we consider him such, Allah is his judge, and we don’t presume to know better than Allah. He was from the first forerunners in al-Jhad against the crusaders in the Land of the Two Rivers (Iraq). If you mention al-Ansar, then count him from among the oldest, the experienced, and the best. If you mention al-Tawheed wal-Jihad (Shaykh Abu Mus’ab al-Zarqawi’s Jama’a), then count him from among the fearless founders. If you mention the Islamic State, then count him from among the establishers of its pillars and the great leaders. If you mention history, then count him from among al-Mujahideen, the victorious, and the heroes. And if you mention the people of bravery, bounty, and chivalry, then count him from among the core.
He, may Allah have mercy on him, would not accept humiliation for his religion. He was patient, constant, and brave. He had high ambitions, higher than all. He infuriated the hypocrites and apostates. When he would reside somewhere, they would retreat, lose hope, and suffer defeat. He was the pride of al-Mujahideen al-Muwahideen. When they would see him, they would feel hopeful, secure, and calm.
I did not know him to be except one who spends the night in prayer and the day in al-Jihad and fasting. I did not look to him except that I saw dignity, honour, and chivalry. I did not speak to him except that I heard from him al-Tawheed, al-Walaa and al-Baraa.
Shaykh Abu Mus’ab al-Zarqawi resided with him. He was the best Ansari for the best Muhajir. He stayed with him and accompanied him for three years, drinking his Aqida and Manhaj. He was his right hand, until he was afflicted with imprisonment at the hands of the crusaders. So he stayed in the school of Youssif several years. He spent his time seeking knowledge, and in this aspiration, he was like the thirsty camel. He did not bore of seeking knowledge for a single day. So he recited al-Qur’an in the ten recitations, preserving them within his two sides. Thus, he was from the memorizers of al-Qur’an. He also read al-Tafsir, al-Sira, al-Nahw, al-Hadith, and Osoul al-Fiqh. Yet his great desire to seek knowledge did not prevent him from taking care of his brothers’ affairs. Therefore, he was their Amir in prison, directing his brothers and solving their problems. He would also confront the deviant people of falsehood and their plots.
Then Allah (SWT) blessed him with being released from prison in a difficult time for the State, about two years ago. And he had gathered both shar’i and military knowledge. He left prison thirsty to meet Allah’s enemies. So he worked day and night as a general director travelling between al-Wilayats, planning for battles and managing assaults. He fueled the fighting and turned Iraq into a hellfire for al-Rawafid and apostates. And he – by Allah’s bounty – was the planner and leader of the last battles in al-Anbar, Ninawa, and Salahuddine. He was the master-mind behind these latest conquests and victories. May Allah have mercy upon you – Oh Abu Abdulrahman – grant you a home in the highest level of al-Firdaws, and resurrect you with Prophets, truthful, and martyrs.
