al-Shaykh Abu Omar al-Hussayni al-Qurayshi al-Baghdadi, he is Hamid Dawoud Muhammad Khalil al-Zawi, was born in 1964 in al-Zawi, a city in the western region of Wilayat al-Anbar. He graduated from police academy in Baghdad. Then worked as a security officer for the Iraq security services in al-Haditha city and since he was well-known for his straight behaviour and his religious activities, he has frequently been subjected to harassment from the Baathist regime and was later dismissed from the army because of his Salafi ideology in the early 1990s, then he started working in an electrical repair shop near his house in 1993.
He was frequently seen attending the mosques especially al-Assaf mosque, which was near his house in al-Haditha, until he became the official Imam of this mosque. As a consequence, he formed a group in al-Haditha from the residents to fight against the Americans and their puppets in cooperation and coordination with other groups in Wilayat al-Anbar. Since there was a direct coordination and assistance between these groups and Jama’at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad, he met Shaykh Abu Muhammad al-Lubnani and Abu Anas al-Shami in al-Haditha and this was a turning point in his Jihadist life. After that, he pledged allegiance to Jama’at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad, when he was known Abu Mahmoud at that time.
With the upsurge of fighting in Iraq, especially in Wilayat al-Anbar, he became well-known for his Jihad against American military forces and their puppets. During this time he met Shaykh Abu Mus’ab and became so close to him that they were spent a lot of time together. Since then he become one of the most wanted by the Americans. Soon after that he moved to Baghdad where he took charge of Majlis al-Shura (Shura Council) and al-Hay’a al-Shar’iya (Shari’a Authority) there, and was known as Abu Marwa. After a great effort in organizing and tracking of different activities in Baghdad, he moved to Wilayat Diyala in the time it was under complete control of al-Mujahideen, and became the Wali (alderman) of Diyala. Shortly after he received the general responsibility of Wilayats (governorates) in which he had to choose the emirs and leaders of the Wilayats. He didn’t recruit any soldier before testing his Aqida and also refused to recruit anyone who has a hypocritical ideology or fight for nationalism, patriotism, democracy, relativism, etc. He chose emirs and soldiers so carefully form only those who he thought were most qualified and there is no risk to corrupt the reputation of the organization.
After the establishment of the Islamic State in late 2006, he was pledged allegiance as Amir al-Mu’mineen upon the Islamic State of Iraq by Hilf al-Mutayibeen (was includes many of the fighting groups in Iraq as well as al-Mujahideen Shura Council that was consist of al-Qaeda in Iraq and seven other Mujahideen groups). He continued leading the State and fighting against crusaders and apostates until most of the Iraq’s land became in the hands of al-Mujahideen. He got his Shahada in al-Tharthar area north of Ramadi city, in the western Wilayat al-Anbar after more than 6-hours of fighting with the crusaders and apostates who couldn’t end the battle without air forces in April 2010.
